Saturday 4th October in brief:
Clipstone Welfare 1 - 1 Boots Athletic (Notts Senior Cup) AET. Clipstone win 4 - 3 on pens
Great effort against side two divisions higher than us. Sloppy defending allowed Clipstone to open the scoring after 19 minutes. Peachy got caught too far forward pushing on which enabled the home full back to cross. Our marking in the box wasn't too clever either and we were 1 - 0 down. We didn't really work the excellent Sprigg in Clipstone's goal much against the wind but were more purposeful after the break and should have won the game in normal time and then again in extra time given the chances we had. Clipstone were always a threat, mainly via former Blade Ash Fleet but for the most part we kept them at arms length
Bonser had to make two or three smart saves but for the last hour of the contest Sprigg was much busier. Our leveller came on 79 when ref Billy Bingham played a good advantage which allowed Gav Rees to feed Scott Peach who burst past his marker to clip past Sprigg. Right at the end of 90 minutes, Rich Saunders had a golden chance but failed to win it for us
In extra time, Saunders produced a great run but chose to pass to Jones who shot over when he might have pulled the trigger, Rees fired a free kick over and Jones was on the wrong end of a very tight offside decision as he clipped home a Rees free kick. In the last minute of extra time, Smith broke and rolled a left footer past Sprigg and onto the post with the rebound bouncing past the onrushing Rees!
Penalties then and it has to be said that Clipstone were superb here. Martin Holt, who had had a superb game (MOM for me was Alex Bowles)- blasted our first kick over the bar by about 29 feet and nearly cleared the netting too! The hosts produced four great kicks- as did Rees, Boulter and Jones so it was left to Smithy to make Clippo take their last one but sadly, young Jack saw Sprigg produce a fine save and were out. Tough on Holty and Jack as both had been really good on the day but never mind, we played really well and on a different day might have won
Thanks to Clippo for their hospitality and good luck to them for the next round. Great battling in tough conditions on a top quality surface and nice snap in the Welfare afterwards. Only negative for me was EIGHT bookings in what was far from a dirty game. The new FA offices at Chilwell will soon be paid for at this rate! We had 4 booked- Bonser for something he said which the ref didn't hear but the lineo thought he'd get involved, Holty for god knows what, Peachy for a regulation foul and poor Smithy for a foul after he'd been kicked around all afternoon
At least Jackson, Rawson, Whatnall, Povey and the other lads who didn't play will be available to help the 2nds in the next round of the Intermediate Cup!
Team was: Bonser, Forde, Saunders, Hutchinson, Bowles (Boulter 118), Holt (c), Peach, C Jones, J Smith, Rees, McArdle (Winch 73). Not used: Miles
Sandhurst 1 - 1 Boots Reserves. Lee Still gets a second half equaliser as the improvement continues at Forest Lane against unbeaten Sandhurst. A fine effort and another game added to the unbeaten run. Well done to Whistler, Taz and the lads and thanks for coming to Clippo to watch the pens on the way back. 5 games unbeaten after a slow start- well done, especially as they were without the inspirational Jon Jon Walton who was ill and Dane Rawson who was injured. MOM was Lee Still
Team: Edwards, Chapman, Lees, Campbell (c), Tasker, Morris, Still, Lodge, Arsali, Bakone, Scothern. Used subs: Bradley, C Jones. Not used: Hissirou
Ashland Rovers 4 - 3 Boots A. Murf was top man in goal (he tells me), with a debut for Dean Morris' little brother 15 year old Billy. Rovers beat NSL Senior side GSB in the Intermediate Cup last weekend so this is a magnificent try by the fellas, losing in the last minute. Terry Kavanagh (2) and a Dunc Bennett screamer counted for Boots
Team: Murphy, Penhale, O'Connor, Wilson, M Smith, Bennett, Howell, Trussler, Payne, Kavanagh, Crowther. Sub used: Dent. Not used: Swales
Top scorers updated after Saturday 4th October games- looks like being close this season!
1st XI fixture change 11th October- it's now Linby (a) instead of Pelican which stays in the pot for a floodlit game

A pen from Kev Rees (right), 2 from Jamie Scothern (above in red shirt), plus goals from new signings Patrick Bakone and Scott Peach secured an excellent 5 - 1 win over Clifton outfit Grey Mare at Pelican on Wednesday for the reserves
This was a potential banana skin against a physical NAA side so well done to the lads in getting past first base and for conducting themselves professionally throughout. Thanks also to all at Pelican FC for hosting the game

Congratulations to 2nd team Assistant Manager Steve Tasker and his wife Alison on the birth of their first child Lilia Elizabeth, born on Tuesday afternoon at 15.33 weighing in at 7lb 12oz. Mother and baby are doing well and we will no doubt wet the baby's head at the weekend
